Side Effects of Limonin

Orange Slice

Limonin has no known harmful side-effects for the average person when taken in moderate doses1. Yet it does have one drawback, without an attached glucoside it has a bitter flavor. Because of this from 1938, when it was discovered, through the 1980s it was studied mainly with a view as to how to get it economically out of orange juice.

Because of the bitter flavor it is highly unlikely that limonin would become a widespread food additive. However, dietary supplementation of limonin in the form of capsules might be feasible.

It should be noted that Limonin is NOT the same as limonene which is the substance that gives the strong smell to oranges and is used as a solvent in cleaning fluids.
